GLYS offers a number of special projects throughout the year. These projects can be one-day projects or take place over several weeks. They are done in partnership with arts and cultural organizations in Buffalo. When we are doing projects/events with these cultural organizations, the information will be made available on our Calendar.
Squeaky Wheel Film Making Project (since 2000)
Training in queer film making.
Photography at The C.E.P.A. Gallery (since 2001)
GLYS youth have participated in multi~week courses in basic photography that starts with "how a camera works" and progresses to taking photos and developing film and photographs. In 2003, photos by GLYS youth were included in an exhibit at The C.E.P.A. Gallery. They were later part of an exhibit at the Buffalo~Niagara International Airport.
Dance
Now and then GLYS has offered its members the chance to explore dance through projects with M.U.S.E. (Musicians United for Superior Education) and the Folkloric Dance Company. Watch our calendar and this space for upcoming programs. Or, if you are interested in dance, talk to Drop~in Center Coordinator Emily Tennant.
Just Buffalo Literary Center
Our Writer~in~Residence project began with JBLC. JBLC brings in a variety of poets and writers~including those who are GLBT~and GLYS youth and Staff often attend the readings. Just Buffalo also sponsors "The BIG Read." The spring 2007 "BIG Read" focuses on Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, African~American Lesbian who was prominent during the Harlem Renaissance. Just Buffalo also offers a variety of workshops. . [GLYS sometimes provides scholarships for members to attend a workshop.] www.justbuffalo.org
Theatre
GLYS provides youth with opportunities to attend live theatre performances at the Alleyway, Shea's, Studio Arena, the Paul Robson Theatre and more! Check out calendar for upcoming events. A reminder: you do not have to visit the Drop~in Center to attend shows with GLYS ~ sign up by calling Emily at the Drop~in Center (855.0221).
Theatre Project
During summer, 2005, GLYS youth took part in the Curve Theatre project that resulted in "SHORTS," a performance done under the lights in the Trinity Theatre. Directors James Konidis and Kevin Craig wrote the proposal and worked with GLYS youth, who received stipends at the conclusion of the project.
